The business case

Care you can prove is care you can bill, staff and defend.

Assisted living margins turn on care levels, full rooms, staffing and the record. Here’s what the industry data says about each, what JXN shows you, and what a small change is worth in your own numbers.

What the data says

Four levers move an assisted living P&L.

Figures from government, insurer and industry sources. Each is an industry average, not a forecast for your building.

Care levels

$450a month: the typical step between care levelsMedian step in 2025–26 Medicaid assisted living rates, OR, WA, IN, OH and MN
  • Rules in states like Texas, California and Ohio require a reassessment at move-in, once a year and after a significant change in condition. In between, it's the community's call.26 TAC 553.259; 22 CCR 87463; OAC 3701-16-08

What JXN shows: Calls and in-room visits for every resident, week by week. See whose care has outgrown their level, and bring the record to the reassessment.

Occupancy

48%of assisted living residents move out in a typical yearASHA, State of Seniors Housing 2025 (median, fiscal 2024)
  • Assisted living occupancy reached 89.1% in Q3 2026, while senior housing inventory grew just 0.4% in a year.NIC MAP, Q3 2026
  • In one vendor's preliminary analysis of about 130 of its own communities, those averaging under 7 minutes to respond were half as likely to see new residents move out within 90 days as those averaging 12 minutes or more.Sage, State of Care 2026. Vendor data showing an association, not independently verified

What JXN shows: Your response time on every call, verified in the room and reported every week.

Staffing

23residents per aide overnight, against 14 on day shiftBowblis et al., JAMDA 2024: 542 Ohio assisted living communities
  • Resident assistant turnover in assisted living ran 43% in 2025.HCS, LeadingAge and NCAL, Assisted Living Salary & Benefits Report 2025–26

What JXN shows: Response by shift, caregiver and hour, including the morning handoff, so you know where to coach.

Risk and the record

53%of assisted living professional liability claims are fallsCNA, Aging Services Claim Report, 12th edition, 2024
  • Nearly 1 in 4 residents falls in any 90-day period.CDC/NCHS, National Post-acute and Long-term Care Study, 2025
  • Of people who lay on the floor for an hour or more after a fall, 97% never used their alarm.Fleming & Brayne, BMJ 2008 (UK)

What JXN shows: A time-stamped record of every call and every verified arrival. Your defense is the record JXN keeps.

What we measured

The number nobody publishes.

There’s no published response-time benchmark for assisted living, and only 39% of senior living organizations measure the return on new technology, though 81% set success metrics for it. JXN measures every call, verified in the room, and reports it every week. Here’s what it measured at our pilots.

Ziegler and LeadingAge CAST, CTO Hotline, 2025 and 2026 (mostly nonprofit providers)

Pilot data: 2 assisted living communities, 5,919 alerts, January to October 2026. Response time is measured from the button press to the caregiver's arrival, verified at the in-room hub. Figures describe the pilot communities and are not a guarantee of results elsewhere.

Your numbers

What a small change is worth at your building.

Adjust move-out assumptions
One resident moved up a care level
$4,800a year
The typical step in five states' Medicaid assisted living rates is about $450 a month. OR, WA, IN, OH, MN rate schedules.
Show the math

$400 step × 12 months = $4,800.

One more occupied room
$74,400a year
That's 2% occupancy at 50 units.Assisted living occupancy averaged 89.1% in Q3 2026. NIC MAP.
Show the math

$6,200 a month × 12 months = $74,400. One room of 50 units is 2%.

One early move-out
$17,400lost
About half of assisted living residents move out in a typical year. ASHA, State of Seniors Housing 2025.
Show the math

2 months empty × $6,200 + $5,000 to refill the room = $17,400.

How to read these numbers

  • Industry figures are averages from the sources named beside them, not a forecast for any building.
  • Vendor data comes from a company that sells into this market. It is labeled where it appears.
  • JXN pilot figures come from our pilot communities, with the sample and definition beside them.
  • The calculator is arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It doesn't predict results; a pilot measures them.
